Diary notes while doing the Big One
Leaving from our home in Adelaide, our big one saw us travel to Darwin, before moving on to Perth where we meet up with our good friends Bruce and Maree, who accompanied us for the return leg across the Nullarbor back to Adelaide. We completed a total of 19,075kms and consumed 5,702.22 litres of auto gas during our trip.
If there was one thing that we learnt very quickly, it was that there is too much out there to see in one trip. To visit everything, would be to turn the trip into a task and not a holiday so we left some items to do next time round. Our travel itinerary was set up in such a way that it allowed us to move, add or delete days as were required which worked very well for us.
Our tow vehicle was a Nissan GU Patrol running on gas. Although the availability of gas on the trip was very good most of the time, it did cause some problems along the way. It did mean that we were required to carry two twenty litre jerry cans with us and at times we wondered if the extra petrol that we had was going to be enough. Our choice vehicle for this sort of trip would have to be without doubt, diesel.
The main highlights of our trip are as follows and are not necessarily in preferential order
-
Alice Springs with it's MacDonnell Ranges .
-
Yellow Waters at Kakadu.
-
Kimberly area in the top of Western Australia.
-
The big tides at Derby.
-
Wildflowers near the Overlander Roadhouse and out from Geraldton.
We met a lot of lovely people during our trip all doing the same thing, and these people will remain in our memory for years to come. It is a big land out there, so if you are thinking of doing a similar trip to the one that we did, don't hesitate and just do it. As they say out there, travel safe and enjoy.
