South Australian Park Reports

A B C E G H L M N P Q R S T W

We have developed our own rating for each Caravan Park that we visit. This rating will give the Park a score out of ten with a figure of ten being the highest rating possible. It is a rating system that suites what we are looking for in a Caravan Park and may not suite everyone's needs like it does our own. Our rating system covers the following five items that we ask ourselves after each visit. Things like the first general appearance of the Caravan Park, manner and helpfulness of the staff, size and ground conditions of the sites, general buildings and Park grounds condition as finally the number of Amenities Blocks to suite the number of people catered for. The spreadsheet that we use to calculate the rating is available to use by clicking on the Microsoft Excel File or to view by the Adobe Reader File.

If you don't already have a copy of the Adobe Reader, go to the Adobe Site, find the logo to the right and download your free version.

We will slowly include an Adobe File with each Caravan Park Report to show how we rated the Caravan Park mentioned. By clicking on the Icon where shown, it will open the Adobe File for that particular Caravan Park's rating.

Cement and paved blocks are being put down for caravans to erect their annexes onto. The modern brick amenities block offers good clean showers and toilets although the hot water does run out with a large crowd. MELROSE:

Melrose Caravan Park is located 269kms North of Adelaide in the Southern Flinders Rangers. The park offers a mix of gravel and lawned sites along side of the creek that runs between the unpowered camping section and the powered section. MOONTA BAY:

Moonta Bay Caravan Park is located 167kms North West of Adelaide and is situated on the Eastern side of Spencer Gulf. The park offers a mix of tourist and permanent sites with most having little grass coverage. There is an upper level section with reasonable lawn coverage on the sites and a lower level section which has undulating small sites and almost no shade. The best part of the bottom section is that you have absolute beach site frontage. The amenity blocks seem ample in number, but were dirty with sand and tree leaves for most of the time that we were there on this trip. With a few newer toilet blocks and a few trees for shade along with larger and level sites, this park has so much potential. Moonta Bay jetty is located at the corner of the Caravan park offering a good place to wet a line.

Last visited January 2007.
PARK RATING: 5

MORGAN:

Morgan Riverside Caravan Park is located on the banks of the Murray River 165kms North East of Adelaide. This is an old park with open grassed sites. One would think when fully booked out, but not always. A nice park to stay in with open fires on a cold night.

PORT BROUGHTON:

Port Broughton Caravan Park is located on the Eastern side of Spencer Gulf 170kms North of Adelaide. This would have to be one of our most visited parks in South Australia as this trip will make it our 12th Easter here in  a row. It offers two large clean and modern amenity blocks with all sites now being dirt as with the current water restrictions and the dry season, the lawns are a thing of the past. Port Broughton is a small sea side town which earns a lot of it's income from tourism.

PORT HUGHES:

Port Hughes Tourist Village is located on the Eastern side of Spencer Gulf 171kms North West of Adelaide. This sea side town offers fishing from the town jetty and near by Moonta Bay jetty.

Last visited June 2000.
PARK RATING: 6

Port Hughes Foreshore Caravan Park is owned and operated by the Tourist Village listed above. All bookings and payments as well as boom gate key collection is done at the Tourist Village office. The Foreshore Park is located right on the water edge of Spencer Gulf and along side of the town jetty. The sites are large with very little grass cover. The site that we had gave us a great view out over the gulf. The only down side to the Park was the unpleasant smell coming from the men's urinal block which needed some dehodorant blocks.

PORT VINCENT:

Port Vincent Foreshore Caravan Park is located 181kms West of Adelaide on the Western side of Gulf St Vincent. This is a very nice park to stop at although it suffered from wind during our last three stays. The recently completed camp kitchen and tv room are a very nice addition to this Park. All sites are lawned with some of them being right against the beach. The modern amenities block is ample and clean. The only fault with this park would be the code pad to access the amenities which means that those who need glasses to read, require them when going to the shower block to enable them to get in.

WILPENA POUND.

Wilpena Pound Camping and Caravan Park is located 481kms North of Adelaide in the flinders Ranges. This is a large camp ground offering mainly a large number of unpowered camping sites and some powered caravan sites. This is a wonderful area with many pretty drives on offer. There are no lawned sites on offer as one might expect, but the atmosphere would be spoilt if lawn was all over the place as that is not what Wilpena is all about. When the camp ground is very busy, it pays to be time selective when wanting to have a hot shower or the water will be cold when you get there.
