Just Cruisin with Mick and Sally

Wilpena Pound - September 4th 2009 until September 8th 2009.

Wilpena Pound Camping & Caravan Park can be found 418 kms north of Adelaide in the Flinders Ranges South Australia.

Fri 4th September 2009: As I had finished night shift at 6.00am, we were all hooked up and on the road by just before 7.00am with Bruce and Maree ahead of us as we headed towards Port Augusta on our way to Wilpena Pound for our extended weekend away. We had decided to go to Port Augusta rather than up through Clare as it was a better road for Sally to drive on while I caught a few hours sleep.

With some rain around Quorn, we hoped that it wasn't going to be a sign of the coming weekend's weather. By the time we had traveled 20 kilometres north of Quorn the rain eased. After a quick fuel stop at Hawker we were soon on our way again and arrived at the Wilpena Pound Campground at 12.41pm.

WILPENA POUND CAMPGROUND PHOTOS

Sat 5th September 2009: With the opening of the "Painters of the Flinders Ranges" art exhibition later in the day, not a lot was done today other than walking around the Campgrounds and relaxing. It was nice to see the emus and kangaroos walking within the Campground as they normally do which brings nature close to home. The exhibition opening was from 4.00pm to 6.00pm where there were 100 different painting for sale from a total of 10 Artist. After the opening, we all went to the Wilpena Pound Resort where we had an evening meal.

Sun 6th September 2009: As the weather had been improving as the weekend progressed, and with showers forecasted in for the start of the following week, it was decided that we would do the Skytrek drive a day earlier than originally planned. With this we headed off towards Willow Springs Station which was only 21 kilometres north of Wilpena Pound where we paid the $55.00 per vehicle and started the drive at 8.45am. All drives must be started no later than 10.30am to allow enough time to complete the trip before it is too late in the afternoon.

Skytrek started from the homestead and first went into a valley before leading us out into open flat country before again taking us back into the hills where we finished at the highest point that a 4WD can access in the Flinders Ranges. It was very winding as we reached the top making it difficult at time to stand still long enough to be able to take photos. We were lucky enough to have had the bulldozer working on some parts of the road over the few days prior to us being there. We completed the trip and arrived back at the homestead by 2.30pm.

Mon 7th September 2009: With some light rain during the night, we surfaced the next morning asking ourselves if we should continue with our planned drive for the day in through Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges. The sky at times looked as if the weather was going to clear so in the end we though that we may as well go for the drive and take whatever the weather throws at us. We headed off towards Blinman until we reached the Brachina Gorge turn off where we drove in to have a look at the many established campgrounds whit in the Gorge. Like the Skytrek drive the day before, there were many gum trees which looked like they would die if they don't get some serious rainfall soon. Once we had completed the drive through Brachina Gorge, we then went back into the Gorge to return back to Wilpena Pound via Bunyeroo Gorge.

MONDAY DRIVE

Tues 8th September 2009: With our drive back to Adelaide today and with bruce and Maree traveling to Broken Hill, we were all on the road at 9.05am. The trip back took a little longer than anticipated as Bruce appeared to have picked up some water in one of his diesel refueling stops with his water in the fuel filer light coming on. After several stops to drain of the water we arrived at Orroroo where we fitted a new fuel filter which didn't help the situation. After a counter lunch at the Junction Hotel at Peterborough, we checked the vacuum hoses around the engine bay and again we could find nothing out of place. Bruce and Maree left us at this point as they headed on to Broken Hill and we returned to Adelaide where we arrived at 4.44pm.
